Postojna is a town of about 15.000 inhabitants, known worldwide by a karst cave, named after the town (Postojna Cave, Postojnska jama in Slovenian) that attracts thousands of visitors daily. There are also many smaller and less known caves nearby. Another intersting site in the neighbourhood is the Predjama Castle, built on the rockface and linked to an underground system of caverns and caves. Its strategic location on the road between the coast and the interior, about half-way between Trieste and Ljubljana, made it an important military post in the past. It is now a developing regional center with secondary schools, a museum and a hospital.
